Waterproof Your Basement for Spring

In the spring, rain accumulates quickly and often doesn't absorb into the ground. This runoff could cause heavy flooding that could damage your home and possessions. Although you can't always predict when it'll rain, you can better prepare your home by following these simple tips. Look for cracks in your basement walls. If you notice watermarks near them, it could be a sign of recent flooding. If you have a sump pump, it would be installed below your basement floor so it collects and discharges any surface water that infiltrates the ground. To ensure it's working properly and not clogged with debris, simply poor a few buckets of water into the sump pump, make sure that it properly discharges the water and shuts off without a problem. Protect your valuables by moving them from the floor to higher ground. Outside, be sure to clean out the downspouts, making sure they're open and free of leaves and debris. Check yard drains and clear any obstructions such as ice or debris. And finally, if you have appliances in your basement, like a washer, a dryer, or a space heater, and you think you may experience some flooding, disconnect the power source. However, if the appliance is submerged or the water level is above the outlet, don't go in the basement. You run the risk of electrocution. These are just a few things you can do to keep your family safe when flooding is imminent.
