The Failures That Put Water on an Ashland Floor

- Split supply lines in a freeze-thaw winter: this part of Ohio does not simply stay frozen. It drops below freezing, comes back up, and drops again, and that cycling is harder on a line running through a rim joist or an unheated back wall than a steady cold spell would be. - Roof, gutter and grade water: overflowing gutters and ground sloping back toward the house push water into wall cavities and window wells, where it feeds mold rather than draining anywhere useful.

Six Stages, In Order, Nothing Skipped
Restoration is sequential, and jumping ahead is how a basement gets rebuilt over moisture that was never removed. That failure stays quiet for months and then announces itself as a smell. Every Ashland job runs the same six stages, and one does not begin until the last has been measured and closed out.
- Inspection and moisture mapping: before anything gets moved, the crew photographs the scene, classifies the water, and maps how far the moisture traveled using meters rather than eyes.
- Extraction: standing water leaves first, with equipment sized to the volume, because every gallon still on the slab is a gallon the dryers would otherwise have to evaporate.
- Drying and dehumidification: air movers and dehumidifiers go in on a plan matched to the materials, and readings are taken daily against a target rather than against a hunch.

Category One, Two and Three Are Not the Same Cleanup
The IICRC sorts a water loss into three categories, and the category rather than the volume decides what is allowed to stay in the house. Category 1 is clean water off a sanitary source: a split supply line, a failed fitting at a fixture, rain through an opening in the roof. Reached early, a good deal of what it soaked can be dried in place and kept.
Category 2 is gray water. It carries contamination without being grossly unsanitary, and appliances account for most of it, a washer discharge line, a dishwasher, a tank that has finally rusted through. The thing to know about it is that it does not stay Category 2. Sitting warm for two or three days moves it up a grade before anyone picks up the phone.
Category 3 is black water, and any town with older sanitary laterals sees it. Sewage that surfaced at a floor drain is Category 3, and so is water that ran across open ground before it got inside. It carries pathogens. That means protective equipment, removal of porous material rather than drying of it, and sanitizing before the dryers ever start. A shop vacuum and a bottle of bleach are not a plan for this one.
Drying a Block-Walled Basement
An unfinished basement looks like it ought to be the easy one to dry, and that is the trap. Concrete block is full of hollow cells that hold water and give it back slowly for days. Bare joists and the subfloor above soak up whatever splashed and wick it sideways along the grain. None of that shows on a walk-through, and none of it comes out with a box fan pointed at a puddle.
So the equipment plan gets built around the materials rather than the square footage. Dehumidification does most of the work in a below-grade space with nowhere useful to exhaust humid air to, air movers are aimed across the block face instead of stirring the middle of the room, and the meters go back in daily until the readings hold steady. If the basement was finished, the drywall gets cut above the visible tide line, because the wet zone always runs higher than the stain.
