The hardest work this equipment does under a house in Alabama almost never happens during a storm. It happens on a humid Tuesday in July. The space under the floor is a slow, damp environment with several quiet sources of clear water feeding one low point, and the pump sitting at that low point spends its working life on small jobs rather than big ones.
Why Is the Sump Pump Running in August When It Has Not Rained?
Start with the air handler. A great many houses here put the heating and cooling equipment under the floor, and in an Alabama summer that equipment pulls gallons of water a day out of the air as condensate. It has to go somewhere, and where there is no gravity route out of the crawl space it goes to the same pit the groundwater does. Add water vapor moving up through an unsealed floor and condensing on cool surfaces, and the pit has a supply that has nothing to do with rainfall at all.
Then there is the ground itself. Red clay does not drain, it delivers. Water that soaks in during a wet spell travels sideways along the top of denser material rather than downward, so it keeps arriving for days after the sky has cleared, and where a perimeter drain has been laid around the footings it collects that flow and routes it to the pit by design. A pump running on a clear day in Birmingham is usually doing exactly what it was installed to do. The question worth asking is whether it has always run this much.
Terrain decides how much reaches any given house. Properties on the slopes below the ridges take water moving downhill through the soil for days after a wet spell, while the flatter ground along the floor of the valley holds it in place instead. Both end at the same pit, and they fill it at very different rates.
Small Jobs, Constantly, and What That Costs a Motor
Duty cycle is the number that matters. A motor is rated for a certain amount of starting and running, and a pump handling several small cycles an hour through a humid Alabama summer spends that rating far faster than one that runs after storms only. A Discharge Line on Clay Has to Go Farther Than You Think
Discharge is the half of the system that decides whether the work counts. The line has to carry water far enough from the footings that it does not soak down and return to the pit, and on clay that means a longer run than instinct suggests, because clay accepts almost nothing once it is wet. A termination against the wall, or into a low corner that already ponds after every storm, produces a loop in which the pump lifts the same water repeatedly until something in it wears out.
The check valve on that line holds the standing column of water in the pipe when the motor shuts off. When it fails the column drops, the pit refills instantly, and the pump starts again. It is a small part with an outsized effect on how long a motor lasts. On sloping ground, which describes a good deal of Birmingham, the run can often be taken far enough downhill to solve the problem properly, and that is worth doing while the trench is open.
Pit Depth Under a Floor You Cannot Stand Up In
Access shapes everything about this installation. A crawl space sump pit is generally shallower and smaller than one cut into a full lower level, because there is less headroom to work in and less depth available before the soil turns to rock or refuses to hold a wall. A shallow pit holds very little between the float rising and dropping, so a steady feed produces constant short cycling, and short cycling is the fastest way to spend a motor.
What to measure is one cycle rather than the total. Half a minute of run every few minutes during heavy rain is a system in balance. Five seconds of run every twenty is a check valve fault or a pit too small for the inflow. A pump running for minutes at a time and barely holding the level is a third case, and on clay ground it usually means the water arriving has changed rather than the pump.
Battery Backup Where the Storm and the Outage Arrive Together
A battery backup is a second pump with its own power source. While you are there, look at three things people skip: what is sitting in the bottom of the pit, whether the intake screen is clear, and whether the ground around the pit is damp in a place it should not be. Do it twice a year, and in Birmingham do it in early spring before the storm season rather than in the middle of it.

A pump manages water that reaches the pit. It does not stop water from reaching the house, and it does not prevent every kind of intrusion.
