This is old lake plain: flat, heavy with clay, and close enough to Lake Erie that the ground has very little fall to work with. Making the Next Storm Cheaper
Most of what can be done here is about the pump and the water around the house. Test the sump before the wet season rather than during it, keep the pit clear of gravel and debris, and check that the check valve holds and that the discharge runs far enough from the wall and stays clear at the outlet through the winter. A battery or water-powered backup earns its cost on ground like this, because the outage and the flood tend to arrive together, and a second pump in the pit is worth considering if the first one runs constantly in a normal spring.
Outside, extend downspouts well past the foundation, keep the grade falling away from the walls, and move piled snow off the ground next to the house when you can. If drains have been slow or have backed up in heavy rain, have the sewer lateral inspected before the next storm and ask about a backwater valve. Inside, know where the main shutoff is, keep stored belongings up off the floor on shelving rather than in cardboard on concrete, and look over washing machine hoses, dishwasher lines and water heater connections once a year.
