At two in the morning during a hard rain, water on a lower-level floor all looks the same. It is dark, it is spreading, and the natural assumption is that the sump pump has quit. Sometimes it has. Quite often in Cincinnati it has not, and the pump is running perfectly while the water is arriving by a route it was never connected to. Sorting that out first is worth more than any part on the shelf, because the three sources have three different repairs and buying the wrong one is expensive and changes nothing.
Where Is the Water Actually Coming From?
Watch where it shows up first. Water seeping in along the joint between the wall and the floor, or through a crack low on a wall, is groundwater that has reached the footing and found the path of least resistance. That is the pit's job, and if the pit is dry while the perimeter is wet, the tile feeding it is blocked rather than the pump being faulty.
Water coming up out of a floor drain is a different story entirely. That is the drain system pushing back, not the ground pushing in, and no sump pump on the market affects it. Water running in at the bottom of an outside stairwell or through a hatchway is a third case, and it is a grading and area-drain problem that happens outdoors. What the Pump Handles, and What It Was Never Wired For
Inside its own lane a pump fails in the familiar ways. A float switch drifts against the crock wall or silts up and never signals the motor. An intake screen clogs until the pump is turning against a restriction. An impeller seizes, and it hums rather than going silent. A check valve stops sealing, so the standing column in the discharge line drops back the instant the motor cuts and the pump restarts seconds later, over and over, spending a duty cycle that had years left in it. And the power goes out in the storm that needed it, which is not a pump fault at all and is the reason battery backups exist.
What it is not wired for is a loaded sewer. A pump lifts water out of a pit and sends it away. It has no influence on what a drain line does when the system it empties into is full, and any diagnosis that treats those as the same problem will keep being wrong.

The single most useful principle in Cincinnati is that the two systems must not share a route. A sump discharge tied into a drain line puts clean groundwater into a system that is already at capacity during exactly the storm that matters, and it gives a surcharge a direct path back to the pit. Most Ohio jurisdictions prohibit that connection outright, and the reason is not paperwork. It is that the connection converts two manageable problems into one unmanageable one.
Which leaves the question of where the discharge actually goes on an Ohio lot. It has to reach ground that will accept the water and carry it away from the foundation. A line that stops a few feet from the wall soaks back down to the tile and returns, so the pump circulates the same water until something wears out. On a tight urban lot with neighbors close on both sides that takes real thought, and where the line runs above grade it needs an outlet that will not ice over in an Ohio cold snap.
Installing a Sump Pit Where the Rock Starts Close to the Floor
Adding a pit to a Cincinnati house that never had one is a bigger job than a swap, and in this market the constraint is usually vertical. Where shale sits a short way under the slab, the crock cannot simply be sunk deeper to buy capacity, so the design has to work with the depth available: the right diameter, an inlet arrangement that actually catches the water traveling along the footing, and a pump matched to a shallower operating range.
Siting is the other half of it. In an older Cincinnati house a pit cut in the convenient corner rather than at the true low point collects very little, and the pump inside it takes the blame for a decision made before it arrived. Working out where the water shows up first, how the floor drains, and where any existing tile runs is why this starts with somebody looking rather than with a number over the phone.
Battery Backup for the Night the Whole System Is Loaded
A battery backup is a second pump with its own power source, and across Ohio it is the most common gap in an otherwise sound installation. The case for it here is specific: the storm that loads the sewer and saturates the ground is the same storm that brings lines down, so the primary pump can be in perfect health and completely irrelevant for six hours. Be clear on the limits. A backup covers an outage measured in hours, how many depends on how fast water is arriving, and it does not excuse leaving a failing primary pump in place.
Crock Size, Cycling and Reading the Rhythm
A crock that is too small for the inflow makes the pump start and stop constantly, and motors are rated for a duty cycle that short cycling spends fast. One that is generously sized lets water stand long enough to go stale and drop sediment onto the intake. Getting it right is a match between the pit, the water this particular foundation actually delivers in a wet spring, and the lift the discharge run demands.
The free diagnostic is the rhythm. During an ordinary Ohio rain, note how long the pump runs and how long the gap is before it starts again. That is your baseline, and every later judgment is a comparison against it. A pump that always cleared the crock in twenty seconds and now takes a minute has told you something well before any water reaches a floor.
A Ten-Minute Check on the Pump and the Floor Drain
Pour water slowly into the crock until the float switch lifts. The pump should start, clear the pit and stop cleanly, without kicking back on a second later. Listen for a hum with no flow, and watch whether the level jumps straight back up when the motor cuts, which is the check valve confessing. While you are down there, look at the floor drain: staining around it, or a ring of debris, says it has surcharged before and that is worth knowing in advance rather than during the next storm.
What the test cannot tell you is whether the tile feeding the pit is open, whether the discharge line is clear along its run, or what happens with no power. Those need somebody looking at the whole installation.
Why We Will Not Call a Sewer Backup a Pump Problem
