Almost nobody in Columbus chose their sump pump. It was in the hole when the keys were handed over, selected to satisfy a plan and a price across an entire development, and it has been sitting in the dark ever since doing whatever the lot asks of it. That is the useful starting point, because it means the question is rarely whether the equipment is broken. It is whether the equipment ever matched the ground it ended up in.
When Every House on the Street Was Built the Same Year
Ohio subdivisions go up in tight windows, which produces a quiet pattern in this work. The pits are the same depth, the pumps are the same model, the drain tile was laid the same week, and a whole Columbus street therefore hits the end of the service life together. What varies is the lot. The house sitting at the bottom of the grade, or the one with the swale running past its corner, has been running its pump several times more than the house on the high side, and it will fail first by a wide margin.

An intake screen clogged to the point the pump turns against nothing. A seized impeller, which hums rather than goes quiet. And the power going out during the storm that needed the pump, which is not a pump fault at all.

A roof is a large catchment, and where the downspouts were connected into the footing drain rather than carried away from the house, a moderate Ohio rain puts hundreds of gallons into the pit that never came out of the ground at all. The pump copes, then copes less well, then does not. Rerouting downspouts to daylight is often the single most effective thing a homeowner in Columbus can do for a pump that is running more than it used to, and it costs the equipment nothing.

What a Builder-Grade Pump Was Actually Sized For
Specification at the development stage is a compromise across dozens of Columbus lots. The pump has to satisfy the plan, clear the depth of the crock, and cost what the budget for the whole phase allows. None of that is wrong, and none of it knows anything about the particular corner your house sits on. So the equipment that is entirely adequate on the high side of the street can be permanently at its limit two hundred feet downhill, and it will show that by running longer, cycling more and wearing out sooner.
Replacement is the moment to correct that, and it is worth doing before the failure rather than after. Sizing means matching the pump to the inflow the pit actually sees across a wet spring, the depth it has to lift, and the length of the discharge run. A larger motor is not automatically better: an oversized unit in a shallow crock short cycles, and short cycling is what kills pumps.
Reading the Run Time as a Wear Gauge
The most valuable diagnostic in this service costs nothing and almost nobody does it. Stand at the top of the stairs during an ordinary rain and listen to the rhythm. How long does the pump run, and how long is the gap before it starts again? That is your baseline. Everything useful afterwards is a comparison against it, because a pump does not usually announce a problem, it drifts into one.
Short intervals with short runs point at a check valve or a crock too shallow for the inflow. Long runs with long gaps usually mean the pump is working harder for the same result, which is an impeller, an intake, or a discharge line collecting sediment. Continuous running in dry weather means groundwater is arriving from somewhere, and that is worth chasing rather than tolerating.
Battery Backup on a Circuit Nobody Checks
A battery backup is a second pump with its own power source, and it is the commonest gap in an otherwise sound installation. Ohio storms take power lines down with wind and ice, and they do it at exactly the moment the ground is saturated, so the primary pump can be in perfect health and completely useless. Be clear on the limits. A backup carries a pit through an outage measured in hours, its endurance depends on how fast water is arriving, and it is not a reason to leave a failing primary pump in service.
The Line Between the Houses, and Why It Matters
Where the discharge ends decides whether the water leaves. A line that stops a few feet from the wall soaks straight back down to the drain tile and returns to the pit, so the pump moves the same water in a loop until something in it wears out. On a narrow suburban lot the temptation is to point the line at the swale between the houses, which sends the problem next door and, in a heavy rain, sends it back.
Two rules matter here. The line has to reach ground that will take the water and carry it away from the foundation, and it must not be tied into the sanitary sewer, which most Ohio jurisdictions prohibit and which puts the water back under the house during a surcharge anyway. Where the line runs above grade it needs an outlet that will not ice up, because a blocked discharge behaves exactly like a dead pump.
Testing a Pump You Have Never Actually Heard
Pour water slowly into the crock until the float switch lifts. The pump should start, clear the pit and stop cleanly, without kicking back on a second later. Listen for a hum with no flow. Watch whether the level jumps back the instant the motor cuts, which is the check valve telling on itself. Then go outside and find where the line ends, because a surprising number of people never have. Do it in the fall and again before the Ohio spring rains arrive.
Replacing a Sump Pump Before It Fails
Repair, replacement, new installation, battery backup systems, discharge line work and diagnosis of the whole pit are Roto-Rooter's work.
