Central Indiana is close to level, and level ground made of dense glacial till has no natural way of moving water off itself. That was a farming problem long before it was a plumbing one, and it was solved the same way across the whole region: bury lines of tile through the fields, collect what the soil will not shed, and route it to a ditch.
