- Category 3, black water: A septic or sewer backup, and any water that crossed the ground before it came inside. Test the sump pump before the wet months and consider a battery backup, since the pump is needed most on the night the power goes out. Inside, appliance hoses, water heater connections and angle stops are cheap to replace and are the most common source of an interior loss. Insulate any line that runs through an unheated crawl space or an attic before a New York cold snap. And if a house sits empty for weeks, shutting the water off at the main and having somebody look in is the difference between a repair and a rebuild.
