Dig down a foot or two almost anywhere in Miami and you reach rock. It is not the dense kind that holds water out. The limestone under this stretch of Florida formed as reef and kept its holes, so the ground behaves less like soil and more like a very large sponge resting in a water table that sits close to the surface. A pit cut into that rock is not a container. It is a low spot in a system that is already full.
Corrosion, Grit and the Parts That Give Out First
Five things end a pump, and in Miami two of them arrive early. A float switch drifts against the pit wall or picks up enough fine sediment that it stops rising cleanly, and the pump never gets the signal to start. An intake screen loads up with the pale grit that limestone sheds, so the motor runs and moves very little. An impeller seizes, which usually announces itself as a hum rather than as silence. A check valve stops sealing, and the column of water standing in the discharge line drops back into the pit the instant the motor cuts, so it starts again a few seconds later and burns through a duty cycle that had years left in it.
The fifth is not a pump problem at all. The storm takes the power out, the groundwater keeps arriving at whatever rate the rock is delivering, and nothing about the equipment is wrong. Near the coast add one more: water with salt in it corrodes fasteners, brackets and impeller vanes faster than a manufacturer's service life assumes, so a unit installed a few years ago can be structurally tired while still sounding healthy.

In a market that loses power to tropical weather while the ground is fully charged, yes, and it is the most common gap found on installations that have otherwise been looked after. A battery backup is a second pump with its own power source, and it is worth being exact about what it does. It carries the pit through an outage measured in hours, and how many hours depends on how hard the water is coming in. It is not a substitute for a primary pump that is already failing, and it will not run for days. What it covers is the specific overlap that does the damage in Miami: a saturated water table and a dark neighborhood at the same time.

Lifting water out of the pit is the easy half. The discharge line has to then carry it somewhere it will not simply soak back down through the rock and return, and on Miami ground that falls a few inches across an entire lot that is a real design question rather than a detail. A short run that ends beside the slab creates a closed loop in which the pump moves the same water over and over until something in it wears out. A line that ends in a low corner of the yard does the same thing more slowly.
Termination also has a rule attached to it. Many Florida jurisdictions do not allow a sump pump to discharge into the sanitary sewer, and a line quietly tied into a floor drain or a cleanout is both a code problem and a good way to put the water straight back under the building during a surcharge. Where the line runs above grade it needs support and a clear outlet, because a crushed or blocked discharge line is indistinguishable from a dead pump right up until somebody looks.
Pit Depth, Cycling and What Constant Running Means
A sump pit in Miami is usually shallower than it would be elsewhere, because there is rock underneath and not much distance to the water table. Shallow means small, and small means the pump starts and stops constantly during heavy rain. Motors are rated for a duty cycle, and short cycling spends it quickly. Oversizing has its own cost: water stands long enough to go stale and to drop sediment onto the intake.
The useful habit is knowing the normal rhythm during ordinary summer rain, because that is your baseline. A pump that has always cleared the pit in twenty seconds and now takes ninety has told you something before any water appears. Continuous running on a dry week is a different message again, and it usually means groundwater or a discharge line returning its own output.
Putting a Sump Pump Where There Was Never a Pit
Plenty of properties in Miami reach a point where the drainage that worked for decades stops being enough. The pattern is recognizable: standing water at the low end of a garage after a downpour, a chalky white bloom on block walls, an elevator or utility pit in a mixed-use building that has started holding water it never used to. A new pit tied into perimeter or sub-slab drainage is often the practical answer.
Siting is most of that job. A pit cut in a convenient corner rather than at the actual low point collects nothing, and the pump in it will look like a failed installation when the equipment is perfectly good. Cutting into limestone also takes different tooling than cutting into soil, and the pit has to be sealed and vented properly so it does not become an open path for humidity into the building. That is an inspection first, not a number over the phone.
Testing the Pump and Inspecting the Metal at the Same Time
Pour water slowly into the sump pit until the float switch lifts. The pump should start, clear the pit, and stop cleanly without kicking back on a second later. Listen for a hum with no flow. Watch whether the level jumps back up the moment the motor cuts, which is the check valve telling on itself. Do it once before the Florida wet season and once after, and do it while the weather is calm.
What that test cannot tell you is whether the pump keeps up under real load, whether the discharge line is clear along its whole length, or whether anything at all happens when the power is out. Those need somebody looking at the installation as a system.

Repair, replacement, new installation, backup systems, discharge line work and diagnosis of the whole pit are all Roto-Rooter's work.
