Two slow processes are at work under this part of the Virginia coast at the same time, and both of them shorten the distance between a floor and the water underneath it. The land is settling. The water is not. The Four Faults, and the One That Is Not a Fault
A float switch that has drifted against the pit wall or picked up debris never sends the start signal, so the pit fills in silence. A clogged intake screen produces the opposite picture: the motor runs and the level does not drop. A seized impeller usually announces itself with a hum. A failed check valve lets the column of water standing in the discharge pipe fall back the instant the pump shuts off, so the pump restarts within seconds and the cycling burns through a duty rating that had years left in it.
The fifth is the outage. In a coastal storm the wind takes the line down and the rain arrives together, and the pump is in perfect condition with no electricity reaching it. A battery backup is a second pump with its own power source, and it is worth being precise about what it buys: hours, not days, and fewer hours the harder the water is coming in. It does not replace a primary pump that is failing, and it is not a reason to defer that work.

Sump pit geometry decides how a pump behaves long before the motor has any say in it. A shallow pit holds very little between the float switching on and switching off, so when the ground is delivering steadily the pump starts and stops constantly. Motors carry a duty rating and short cycling spends it fast. Go the other way and an oversized pit lets water stand until it goes stale and drops sediment onto the intake, which in sandy Virginia ground happens faster than most homeowners would guess.
The useful measurement is not how much the pump runs in total but how long a single cycle lasts. Thirty seconds every few minutes during heavy rain is a system in balance. Six seconds every thirty seconds is a check valve fault or a pit that cannot hold a cycle's worth of water, and it is a different repair from a pump that runs for four minutes and barely keeps up.
Getting the Water Off a Lot With Almost No Fall
Discharge is the harder half of this job in Norfolk, where the yard sits barely above the water it drains into. Listen for a hum with no movement and watch whether the level climbs again the moment the motor cuts. Then look at what is in the bottom of the pit, because sand and silt collecting around the intake is the local failure in slow motion.
