What Comes Up, and Why the Category Matters
The IICRC sorts water by what it carries rather than by how much of it there is. Water from a supply line, a water heater connection or rain through a roof is category one: sanitary at the source, and dryable in place if a crew reaches it quickly. Discharge from a washing machine, a dishwasher or an overflowing fixture is category two, carrying enough contamination that cleaning and sanitizing are required on top of drying.
Anything that returns through a drain line is category three, along with floodwater and any loss that has been sitting long enough to grow its own biology. Category three is where the work changes shape. Crews work in protective equipment, the area is contained so foot traffic does not carry contamination upstairs, porous material that cannot be decontaminated is removed and disposed of, and the remaining structure is cleaned, treated with antimicrobials and then dried to verified readings.

Nothing in a restoration can be done out of order, because each stage depends on the state the previous one left the building in:
- Assessment and containment: The crew identifies the water category, maps the wet area with meters and cameras, and seals the affected zone so nothing is tracked into dry parts of the house.
