Under a floor, how a loss gets classified has more to do with contact than with origin. Water that left a supply line perfectly sanitary does not stay that way once it has spread across bare soil, through old insulation and along framing that has been damp before. The three IICRC categories below are graded on what the water picked up, not on where it started.
- Category 1, clean water: A split supply line, a failed connection or rain coming in above. Sanitary where it starts, and still treatable as clean if it is caught before it reaches the ground under the house.
- Category 2, gray water: Appliance discharge, an overflowed fixture, or clean water that has picked up contaminants along the way. This is where most crawl-space losses land by the time they are found.

Wood floors need patient, controlled drying rather than fast drying, because pushing too hard is how a board that could have flattened out ends up cupped for good.
