Discharge from an outdoor basin in Orange County usually goes to the street, through a curb outlet or into a drainage feature that carries it off the property. Getting that right matters more here than in places with a slope, because the alternative is water released onto ground that is already saturated and already flat, where it spreads, soaks down and finds the same inlets that collected it. The check valve is the small part that decides how much of this works. It holds the column of water standing in the line between cycles, and in an outdoor basin exposed to heat and grit it has a harder life than an indoor one. If there is genuine fall to a curb outlet, a pump may be an inherited addition that no longer earns its place, and it is worth knowing which case you are in before replacing anything.
The same question applies indoors. Where a house sits on a slab, a sump pit may be tied into under-slab drainage or set at the low point of a garage floor, and those fill from a different direction than a yard system does.
Cycling, Basin Depth and Debris You Cannot See
Across Orange County, a collection basin that is too shallow for the inflow refills before the motor has cooled, so the unit starts and stops constantly and burns through its rated duty in a season or two. Sediment makes this worse over time by reducing the working depth without anyone noticing, so a basin that behaved when it was installed can be short cycling badly a decade later with nothing broken. The most common real gap in these installations is the absence of a second source of power. The pump should start, clear the basin and stop cleanly without restarting a second later. Listen for a hum with no flow, watch whether the level jumps straight back up at shutoff, and time the run so there is a figure to compare against next autumn.
Then walk to the curb and confirm water actually arrives there. What the test cannot tell you is whether the system keeps up under a real band of rain or whether the buried lines between the grates and the basin are clear, and those need someone assessing the installation end to end.
