The call that catches people here arrives in February, and it tends to start with the same sentence: it handled far worse than this back in November. That is usually true, and it is also the reason the pump is losing. Nothing about the rain changed. The ground did, and by late winter in Portland it has been full for weeks.
Why the Worst Day for a Sump Pump Is Not the Wettest One
Soil holds a certain volume of water and no more. Early in the season it is dry enough to absorb most of a heavy rain, so a storm that drops a lot in a short time produces surprisingly little at the footing. Months later the same soil is at capacity, and the next rain has nowhere to be stored, so nearly all of it moves. It travels along the top of denser layers, reaches drain tile and a foundation, and ends up in the pit within hours instead of days.
That is why the intensity of a single storm is a poor guide to what this equipment will be asked to do in Oregon. What matters is where you are in the season. A pump that cleared its pit in fifteen-second bursts in October and is running for two minutes at a time in February is not necessarily failing. It is being asked to do a genuinely different job, and the question is whether it has the condition and the backup to keep doing it for another two months.
What Months of Steady Work Does to the Equipment
Elsewhere a pump is a storm appliance that runs hard for an evening and rests. Here it is closer to a circulating pump with a long duty season, and wear follows run hours rather than the calendar. Impellers thin out. Bearings get noisy. The float switch, which is a mechanical device operating a few times an hour for months, is the part that fails first in a great many Portland houses, and it fails without warning the household.
The check valve deserves the same attention for the same reason. Every cycle closes it once. A valve that no longer seats lets the column of water in the discharge pipe drop straight back into the pit, so the pump restarts immediately and handles the same water repeatedly, and over a five-month season that arithmetic turns into a burnt-out motor in a fraction of the expected service life.

An Outlet That Runs for Months, Not for Minutes
The discharge line gets designed as though it will operate occasionally, and in this market it operates almost continuously through half the year. That changes what a good termination looks like. Water leaving the pipe has to land somewhere that can absorb a season of it rather than a storm's worth, far enough from the foundation that it does not simply soak back to the drain tile and return, and on ground with enough fall to move it along instead of ponding.
What we find instead is a short run ending at the corner of the house, which works in October and produces a permanently saturated patch by January. From there the water goes down, reaches the tile, and comes back to the pit, so the pump spends the rest of the winter lifting the same water in a loop. On a sloping lot the answer is length and fall to somewhere the water is meant to go. On flat ground it takes more thought, and a dry well in soil that is already at capacity is not thought, it is postponement. The line must never be tied into the sanitary sewer, and Oregon jurisdictions are clear about that.
How Long Does a Backup Last if the Pump Never Rests?
Less than the box implies, and the reason is worth understanding rather than arguing with. A battery backup is a second pump with its own power source, and the runtime quoted for one assumes intermittent cycling. During the weather that puts the power out here, a winter wind event on saturated ground, the pit is filling almost as fast as the pump can empty it, so the battery is being asked for close to continuous duty and the hours shrink accordingly.
It still earns its place, with the limits stated plainly. It covers an outage of hours, not of days. It is not a substitute for a primary unit that is worn, and in this market a worn primary is more likely than elsewhere because of the run hours. Add a high-water alarm alongside it. In a season where the pump runs constantly, an alarm is the only thing that will tell you the level has started climbing.
Cycling Worth Comparing Against Last Month
Most advice about cycling assumes a stable baseline, and there is no stable baseline in a market with a five-month season. Short runs at long intervals in autumn and long runs close together in late winter are both normal. What is not normal is a change that does not fit the season: longer runs in the same week, a pit that stops emptying fully, or rapid on and off cycling every few seconds, which points at the check valve or at a pit too small for the inflow it is now receiving.
Pit size is worth a thought when the season is long. Undersized, and the pump starts far more times per day than it was designed for, which spends its life quickly because starting is the hardest thing a motor does. Oversized, and water stands long enough to go stale and to settle fines onto the intake screen. Neither extreme announces itself, and both cost you in the last weeks of a wet winter rather than in the first.
Check It Before the Rain Starts, Then Listen in February
Pour a bucket of water slowly into the pit until the float lifts. The pump should start, clear the pit and stop cleanly without restarting a moment later. Listen for a hum with no flow. Watch whether the level holds after it shuts off, because an immediate refill is the check valve telling on itself. Then walk the line outside and confirm water is leaving the far end and going somewhere sensible.
Do that in early autumn, before the first sustained rain, which is the single most useful hour of maintenance available in Oregon. Then do something no other market really needs: pay attention again in the middle of winter, when the ground is full and the system is genuinely loaded. That is when a marginal pump shows itself, and it is still early enough to do something about it.
A Bigger Pump Is Not a Drier Lot
Pump repair and replacement, the pit, the float and switch, the check valve, backup systems and the discharge line are all this team's work.
