Worcester was built across a run of hills, and what those hills are made of decides how water behaves here. The ground under most of the city is glacial till: a dense, compacted mix of clay, sand and stone left behind by the ice. Till does not take water down. Water reaching it spreads out on top and travels along the slope until something interrupts it, and on a hillside street the thing that interrupts it is the uphill wall of the next building down. A sloped lot looks like a gift for discharge and usually is, but it hides a trap. Water leaving the line has to keep going. On a Worcester hillside the easy termination point is a few feet out on the downhill side, which is fine until the ground there saturates and the water works back along the same path it came from. What was a drainage solution becomes a loop, and the pump moves the same water until the motor gives out early.
Two things settle it. The termination has to be far enough out and low enough that gravity carries the water clear of the building, and the line cannot be tied into the sanitary sewer, which is prohibited across Massachusetts. Where a paved yard leaves no obvious route, the answer is a longer run to a legal outlet rather than a shorter one to a convenient spot.
The check valve on that line is a small part with an outsized effect. It holds the column of water in the pipe when the motor cuts. When it fails, the pit refills instantly and the cycling begins, and the motor that dies eighteen months later is recorded as a pump failure when it was a valve failure.
Is a Battery Backup Sump Pump Worth It in an Ice Storm?

Inflow on a hillside is not the same shape as inflow on flat ground. It is not a steady seep from below but a surge that follows the melt or the rain by a few hours and then falls away. A pit sized for a gentle groundwater feed fills faster than the pump can clear during that surge, so the unit short cycles exactly when it is needed most. A pit that is too large lets water stand between events, go stale, and drop sediment onto the intake.

Testing the Pit So the Whole House Knows the Sound
Pour a bucket of water slowly into the sump pit until the float switch rises. The pump should start, clear the pit, and stop cleanly without restarting a second later.
