Emergency Plumbing in Traverse City, MI

Plumbing emergencies don't wait for business hours. A burst pipe behind the wall, a sewer line backing up into the basement, or a water heater that stops working overnight demands immediate attention - not a next-day appointment. Roto-Rooter operates 24/7, 365 days a year, dispatching technicians day and night, including weekends and holidays.

When you call 231-421-7497, you reach a live dispatcher who routes a technician to your address. The technician arrives with the tools to diagnose the problem on the spot - whether that's a failed shutoff valve, a cracked supply line, or a main sewer blockage affecting every drain in the house.

Speed matters in a plumbing emergency. Every minute a pipe continues leaking, water works deeper into walls, subfloor, and framing. Roto-Rooter's around-the-clock availability exists precisely because the damage compounds with delay. Call 231-421-7497 the moment you suspect a serious plumbing failure - not after you've spent hours trying to manage it yourself.

Truly amazing company. I called in with an emergency in the middle of the night. Raw sewage backing up in basement. I could not wait until morning. ... The emergency technician Jack was there within 3 minutes of my call. What a relief. 45 minutes letter my lines were clear after he explained exactly what he was doing. When I got the bill, I was so pleased. it was 1/2 of what I thought it would be. I recommend these guys to anyone having sewer or drain issues. They are the BEST!!!

Situation: Plugged kitchen sink. Regular plumbing vendor unable to unplug. But no qualms collecting full service call payment. ("Not even a discount for plumbers' crack.") Distress call to Roto-Rooter, professionally and courteously ... handled by Samantha. "We'll have a service crew at your home in the morning between 9 and 10 a.m. Mr. Smith." At 9 a.m. sharp, Ben and Brad appeared, apologizing for not being a few minutes early. Within minutes they went to work, explained the procedure, and provided progress updates every ten minutes or so. Courteous and informed communication. Geez, someone gets customer service! Within an hour our drain was working again; the kitchen sink area was cleaned; and they were on their way to the next customers. Oh, the bill? Two-third the plumber's invoice for a task satisfactorly completed. Recommend Roto-Rooter to our neighbors and friends? You bet. Thank you. G. Smith Interlochen, MI

Accidentally called Mr. Rooter, what a mistake! THE REAL ROTO tech arrived on time and took less than 10 minutes to fix our problem. This was after Mr. Rotter which ... entailed their so called master plumber, their camera and hydro scrub which I was told could cut through a tree root that was 4inches in diameter (we do not have any trees near our building) his point was that nothing could with stand the "hydro scour". I was told after the process he could send a camera down to show the pipe would be free and clear, for a additional charge of course. I viewed the image on his iPad. I saw something flowing back and forth on the image, I asked what it was he replied,"a string from a tampon, they are the strongest string known to man, but could not be restricting the water flow." Our drain still overflowed, we were than told that one of our pipes was most likely cracked and that they could cut through our concrete floor to replace it. After the $694.84 charge that the hydro scour that would clear anything, but did not I certainly had had enough. The story goes on with another rooter and charge and still a clogged over flowing drain. I had called a "rooter" something years ago and they were great. The search began, one of our employees remembered the "color of the truck , that the guy who knew what he was doing had". Which brought us to, ROTO ROOTER. I have never written a review for any service, but if you ever need a plumber, please call ROTO ROOTER, not the other ones. By the way, it was the tampon, Roto Rooters tech said, " the image on the camera can be deceiving" and with he hooked it out and presto a fast running drain. Thank you ROTO ROOTER!

2 of your guys came out a few weeks ago. I'd had trouble off & on with one toilet & was now having trouble with the second-my last "resort"! Both ... still flushed but problems off & on for quite awhile & I was getting tired of saying a prayer every time the water rose in the bowl...I decided before they were done that I should probably just replace my 30 year old ? toilets. First they tried to make the 2d toilet flush better in the meantime, but due to a seized valve couldn't proceed. Two very very courteous & thoughtful servicemen! Also I'd say that Ben, who answers when I call, is very courteous & professional also. I even got a call when they were running late though would still be within the time frame or originally given to me. I knew I had a good company then...so their awesome plumber Russel Mccormack came the following week & installed my 2 toilets quickly & efficiently. And boy oy boy what a friendly, caring guy!! He felt like "family" pretty quickly. He even showed me damage done in the original manufacturing of 1 toilet that should never have been passed off as "OK" for inspections. I'll just say lots of glue was involved. Thank you Roto Rooter, I'm so happy to have a Plumber now that I can call on with any needs! Roto Rooter Rocks!!! Mary in Kingsley

Tim came today to help us with a completely clogged sink. He was very professional and knowledgeable and told me everything he was doing. It took several passes ... to get it completely clear and he stuck with it. He was very polite, friendly, and personable and left the space very clean when he was done. If I ever need service again, I hope he's the technician!

Plumbing problems follow predictable patterns regardless of where a home is located. The same pipe materials fail in the same ways, the same drain configurations collect the same buildup, and the same water heater components wear out on similar timelines. Understanding what's likely wrong - and why - helps homeowners in Traverse City make faster decisions when something goes sideways.

Drain Backups and Clogs

Slow or stopped drains are among the most common calls Roto-Rooter receives. Kitchen drains clog from cooking grease that cools and solidifies on the pipe wall, layer by layer, until flow slows to a trickle. Bathroom drains collect hair and soap scum just past the P-trap. When multiple fixtures back up at the same time - the toilet gurgles while the shower drains slowly - the blockage is almost always in the main sewer line, not at any individual fixture.

Water Heater Failures

A water heater that rumbles, pops, or delivers lukewarm water is telling you something specific. Sediment accumulates on the tank floor over time, insulating the heating element and forcing the unit to work harder. A failing anode rod accelerates corrosion inside the tank. A thermostat that drifts out of calibration produces inconsistent temperatures. Each symptom points to a different component - and a technician who knows the difference fixes the right part the first time.

Hidden Leaks

Not every leak announces itself with standing water. Supply lines behind walls, connections under slabs, and fittings inside cabinets can drip slowly for weeks before visible damage appears. Roto-Rooter technicians use moisture meters and systematic visual inspection to trace leaks back to their source without unnecessary demolition.

Pipe material is a useful diagnostic starting point. Galvanized steel pipes corrode from the inside as they age, gradually restricting flow and eventually developing pinhole leaks at the corroded sections. Copper holds up well but can pit under certain conditions. PEX and PVC are more forgiving but can fail at fittings if connections weren't made correctly during installation. Knowing what's in the wall shapes how a technician approaches a repair - and whether a targeted fix or a section repipe makes more sense long-term.

Pressure Problems

Low water pressure throughout the house usually points to one of three causes: a supply issue upstream, a partially closed or failing shutoff valve, or a pressure reducing valve that needs adjustment or replacement. A pressure reducing valve regulates incoming municipal pressure to a safe household range - when it fails, pressure either drops too low or climbs too high. High pressure is the more dangerous condition because it stresses every fitting, valve, and appliance connection in the system.

Fixture and Appliance Connections

A running toilet typically needs a new flapper or fill valve - straightforward repairs that stop the constant water waste. Garbage disposals jam or fail at the motor. Dishwasher supply lines, ice maker connections, and washing machine hoses all carry water under pressure and all eventually wear. A failed ice maker line, for example, can leak slowly behind the refrigerator for weeks before it surfaces as a visible problem. Roto-Rooter handles fixture repair, valve replacement, and appliance plumbing connections as part of its standard plumbing service. Call 231-421-7497 to schedule a diagnostic visit.

Frequently Asked Questions in Traverse City

How can I contact my local Roto-Rooter?

Please visit our locations page to find the nearest Roto-Rooter.

How do I know if my basement floor drain is backing up because of a main line problem?

The basement floor drain sits at the lowest point in the home's drainage system, so it's the first place to show a backup when the main sewer line is compromised. If it backs up while you're running laundry or flushing toilets upstairs, the main line is the likely culprit. A Roto-Rooter technician inspects the floor drain, checks the main clean-out, and uses camera inspection to confirm where the blockage is.

Why does my kitchen drain keep clogging even though I don't pour grease down it?

Cooking grease doesn't have to be poured directly down the drain to cause problems. Rinsing dishes, washing pans, and running the garbage disposal all send small amounts of fat and food solids into the line. That material cools on the pipe wall, layers up gradually, and eventually narrows the drain to the point of backing up. Hydro jetting removes that layered buildup from the pipe wall so the clog doesn't rebuild quickly.

My toilet keeps running long after I flush it - is that a big deal?

A constantly running toilet wastes a significant amount of water and usually means the flapper no longer seals properly or the fill valve is worn. Both are straightforward repairs. If the flapper warps or the fill valve float sticks in the open position, water runs continuously from the tank into the bowl. A Roto-Rooter technician diagnoses the exact component and replaces it so the tank fills and stops correctly.

Is it safe to call a plumber in the middle of the night for a burst pipe?

Yes. Roto-Rooter dispatches technicians 24/7, 365 days a year because a burst pipe can't wait until morning. While you wait, shut off the main water supply valve to limit damage. A Roto-Rooter technician arrives, assesses the break, and makes the repair. Galvanized steel pipes in particular can split suddenly as interior corrosion thins the pipe wall over time. Call 231-421-7497 any hour for emergency service.

Why do my toilet and shower back up at the same time?

When two or more fixtures back up simultaneously, the blockage is almost always in the main sewer line, not in the individual fixture drains. Running water from the shower pushes waste toward the main, and if the main is blocked, it has nowhere to go but back up through the toilet. Roto-Rooter technicians clear main line blockages with heavy-duty augering equipment and confirm the line is clear with a camera inspection.

Can a plumber tell what's wrong inside my sewer line without digging it up?

Yes. Roto-Rooter technicians use sewer camera inspection to run a video feed through the line and see exactly what's happening inside. A camera reveals roots growing through joint cracks, a collapsed section, a belly where the pipe dips and collects debris, or simple buildup. That diagnosis determines the right fix - clearing, jetting, or repair - and prevents unnecessary excavation.

What causes tree roots to get into drain pipes, and can it be fixed?

Roots enter sewer laterals through hairline cracks at pipe joints, particularly in older clay or cast iron lines. Once inside, they absorb moisture and expand, eventually causing recurring clogs or a full blockage. Roto-Rooter clears root intrusion mechanically with the Roto-Rooter Machine, which cuts roots at the pipe wall. Camera inspection afterward confirms how much of the line is affected and whether a longer-term repair is needed.

What's the difference between a drain snake and hydro jetting - which one do I need?

A drain snake, or auger, cuts through a blockage and restores flow. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the entire pipe wall, removing calcified grease, mineral scale, and root debris that a cable auger leaves behind. If your drain clogs repeatedly within weeks of being cleared, the buildup on the pipe wall is likely the cause. Roto-Rooter technicians assess the line and recommend the right method.

Why does my whole house have low water pressure all of a sudden?

A sudden drop in pressure across multiple fixtures usually points to a supply line leak, a failing pressure reducing valve, or a partial blockage in the main. A Roto-Rooter technician diagnoses the cause by testing pressure at different points in the system. A pressure reducing valve failure, for example, can allow pressure to swing too high or drop too low, stressing every fixture in the home.

How do I know if I have a hidden water leak inside my walls?

Hidden leaks often show up as soft spots in drywall, discolored paint, or a water meter that keeps running when every fixture is off. A Roto-Rooter technician uses moisture meters and visual inspection to trace the leak to its source without tearing out unnecessary material. Finding it early prevents structural damage and mold growth. Call 231-421-7497 to schedule a leak detection visit in Traverse City, MI.

My water heater is making a rumbling noise - what's causing that?

Rumbling typically means sediment has settled on the tank floor. As the burner heats the water, it forces steam through that sediment layer, creating the noise. Left alone, sediment insulates the heating element, shortens tank life, and raises energy costs. A Roto-Rooter technician flushes the tank, inspects the anode rod, and checks the pressure relief valve to restore efficient operation.

Roto-Rooter has been in business since 1935. In the decades since, the company has grown into one of the most recognized plumbing and drain service brands in North America - built on a consistent process that homeowners can count on regardless of which market they're in. That consistency is the point. A Roto-Rooter technician in any city follows the same diagnostic sequence, uses the same equipment standards, and reports findings the same way.

Uniformed, identifiable technicians arrive with fully equipped service vehicles. The diagnostic process starts with listening - understanding the symptom the homeowner describes - then moves to systematic inspection. Camera inspection traces sewer line conditions without guesswork. Moisture meters locate hidden leaks without unnecessary wall demolition. Hydro jetting removes calcified grease and mineral scale that a cable auger cannot reach. These aren't improvised approaches; they're methods refined across millions of service calls.

A National Dispatch Network

The Roto-Rooter dispatch network operates around the clock. When you call 231-421-7497 for service in Traverse City, you're connecting with a system designed to route the right technician to your address efficiently - at 2 p.m. or 2 a.m. The 24/7, 365-day availability isn't a marketing claim; it's the operational baseline the brand has maintained because plumbing emergencies don't conform to business hours.

Service Scope

  • Full plumbing service - leak detection, pipe repair and replacement, water heater diagnosis and repair, fixture installation, pressure diagnosis
  • Drain cleaning - mechanical augering, hydro jetting, camera inspection, main line backups, kitchen and bathroom clogs, floor drain service, tree root intrusion
